Experience Latin America

With its sheer scale and interesting contrasts, Latin America is a destination on any globe-trekker's list.

Latin America enjoys distinctive natural features, such as the Andes mountains in the west and the Amazon rainforest basin found in Brazil, Peru and Venezuela. On this continent, you'll find arid desert tracts, deep jungles, and the highest waterfalls in the world.

Most Latin Americans are coming of age in a continent that has seen a lot of economical and social changes, so visitors can expect a lot of contrasts between cities and open country, and between one city district and the next.

Latin America comprises the southern half of the Americas, although in a cultural sense, Central American countries like Mexico and Honduras are included. The modern nations of Latin America trace a common origin in the coming of European explorers and settlers from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and share the Spanish language and heritage. The only exception is Brazil, which was the centre of Portugal's empire, and whose version of Portuguese is now better-known worldwide.

Down below you'll discover more about Latin America's destinations.

Popular Latin American Destinations

Galapagos islands - Charles Darwin found a wealth of evolution case studies here, and boat trips can take you sightseeing around the Galapagos Islands' unique stock of sea turtles, iguanas, penguins, diving spots, and bird habitats.

Brazil - South America's most photogenic country, not least because of its people. Tourists flock to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, the wine country of Rio Grade de Sul, and jungle treks along the Amazon River.

Mexico - lots of Aussies love to bask under Mexico's sun. Mexico vacation packages can include anywhere from the metropolitan sights of Mexico City to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta. Mexico also boasts of accessible Mayan ruins and a fascinating contemporary culture.

Peru - Macchu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas can be found in the highlands of Peru. The Inca trail is Latin America's most famous walking trail, climbing up from subtropical woods to mountain groves.

Costa Rica - Central America's most-visited country has excellent beach resorts, lush, cool rainforests and nature preserves. Costa Rica is a world pioneer in eco-tourism, and enjoys a premier reputation in Latin America for its standard of living.

Argentina - the capital Buenos Aires has a lively night scene, and you'll find tango clubs, fashion boutiques and more shopping options at relatively cheap prices. The city is also known for its richly European-influenced heritage.

Santiago - Chile's glittering capital is only a few hours away from Alpine (or rather Andean) skiing, wineries and vineyards, and cold-water beaches.
