Latin America vacations and holiday tour packages
If you're travelling to Latin America from November to March, remember this is also the summer season for much of the region, and the locals will be hitting the seacoast. From the many travel packages you can choose from, here's a list to spark off your own ideas:
Twin cities - Buenos Aires and Montevideo, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Mexico city and Cancun, or even Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo. These cities are a few hours apart by plane, and provide contrasts between downtown shopping and beach hopping, or festival atmosphere and cultural history.
Coast to Coast - start off with a Pacific resort in Acapulco, Mexico and then head for Cancun on the Caribbean, or go farther and surf in Brazil's southern Atlantic coast.
Nature tripping - the Iguazu Falls in northern Argentina are higher than the Niagara Falls, and the cascading water is only metres away from the observation deck. In Chile's Patagonia, you'll find sheer towers of rock sculpted by ice. Brazil has rainforests on the Atlantic Coast and Venezuela has extensive marshes teeming with wading birds and migratory species. The lake district between Chile and Argentina features towering vistas of the Andean mountains, lots of sailing, and bus tours.
Relics - ruins of the Mayan cities are a standard tour in Guatemala, and Mexico is known for its Aztec pyramids and Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula. You can trek in the homeland of the Incas in Peru's Andes range and the ancient capital, Cusco. In Santiago, Chile, you can visit a collection of Pre-Columbian art from the Incas and other indigenous tribes of South America.
Party holidays - Rio de Janeiro bursts into sensuality and colour during Mardi Gras, and its beaches beckon the rest of the year. Have your fill of Latin America's nightlife in its metropolises.
Road tripping - just like in the 'Motorcycle Diaries' you can savour life on the road on the Pan-American Highway and the overland routes connecting Chile, Argentina and Brazil from east to west. Join a coach tour and stay awhile if you want to see more of a particular stop.
